What is NICE about having an identified trait like “sensory processing sensitivity” is that it can give a language for our experience. It can feel like “oooohhhhhh. So I’m not crazy? I just have a slightly more vigilant nervous system. And I’m not alone? What a relief!”

The downside, though, is that it can behave like a box. Other people can say things like “Ohhh….you’re sensitive? What a bummer. That must be rough.” Or sometimes we might use it as an excuse “oh I really wish I could do that but….I’m sensitive. So nope.”

It’s important to remember that being “highly sensitive” is just a neutral trait (like having brown hair or being an introvert). And it’s only one of MANY other traits that help inform the way we are and how/why we operate the way we do.
